when i was in grade 4, my brother taught me how to play chess.
he makes fun of me whenever he beats me in 3 moves.
[asar talo ako]

then when i was in grade 5,
my sister had a surgical operation so she had to stay at home
and she had to do some chores.
but since she was lazy and she always wanted to avoid the chores,

she asked me to play chess with her.
whoever loses will do the chores.

in the first few games, she maked me win to set my mood.
she always do that [bully!]
however, i always turned out to be the loser.
but i never gave up.

i tried and tried and tried and tried
until my hands became so pale
in washing dishes from morning til night.
we stopped playing when school started.

one day,
i was watching an interschool meet in another school.
i was in grade six then.
i was wondering and hoping that i had a sport too.
it was a pity just to watch.

its annoying to be 'sportless'.
i was fat then, i can't run, i can't jump.
there was no sport for me. =(

then suddenly, the sport coordinator annouced that they
were looking for chess players.
they were asking anyone who knows how to play chess to proceed to a
certain room.

i ignored it. [i can't even win against my sister!]
i wasn't even bothered by the announcement.

it was totally nonsense for me.

unfortunately[or fortunately], no one showed up in the announcement,
no one was interested.
then the desperate coordinator, who was looking for a representative
in chess category to compete for the higher meet, went from quarters to quarters.
i was eating my lunch then when my neighboor-classmate pointed me.
no way! i said to myself.
but i was extremely nervous.
then they started to pull me out of the room.
they literally dragged me! [sayang wala pang bantay bata nun!]
i had no choice so i went with the flow.
they brought me in to a room full of chess boards.
all i can remember, i just played there until dawn.
i can't remember how many rounds and who were my opponents.
i just played and played and played.
then the next thing i knew, they awarded me a ribbon [lang-- kuripot!]
then after that, they sent a request to my school to allow me

to cut classes and attend the training.

i was under the care of my 'tyrant grandmother' then
so i doubted if she'll allow me to go.
but she did.

after that, i was brought to another school to compete.
i didnt even realize what i was doing.
all i know was i have to play and win.
after the 5-day tournament, they awarded me 2 gold medals.
my grandmother was so happy.

starting that time, she wasn't so strict on me anymore.

i was happy with the changes.
i was like a bird who was finally freed.
so then on, i always played my best--for freedom.

that is the reason why i am here right now,
in the crowded Manila.

i miss my little world before.
but i like it here.

i like the freedom i have.
all because of CHESS

CHESS is my blessing.
a blessing in disguise.
